WHAT IS RFID ?
RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) is an electronic process by which you can be identified more rapidly and more easily when in stores, in airports, in public transport, etc.
It consists mainly of a small chip, integrated in a multitude of products used by consumers on a daily basis.
Although this technology was mainly widespread in North America and Japan, it now exists in France, and is expected to develop further in the coming years.
This technology can be very useful in everyday life, in particularly to save time (thanks to contactless payment for example). However, RFID technology possesses many security threats that are very worrying to say the least.
SECURITY PROBLEMS AND RISKS RELATED TO RFID
The radio waves issued by the RFID chip can contain personal information used to identify a person. They can for example authorize a payment. The problem is that these radio waves are not protected by any sort of encryption. Meaning, any stranger that walks passed one of your RFID chips with a simple phone equipped with a NFC technology, can pick up on its signal, read it, stock it and even copy it, in only a few seconds. In which case, any dishonest person equipped with this system can pretend to be you, because he has a duplicate of your RFID chip.
RFID chips are not only on credit cards. Other objects such as passports, transport cards, access badges are also equipped with it.
HOW TO PROTECT YOUR INFORMATION ?
If you own a card with a RFID chip that puts you at risk of fraud and identity theft, it is still possible to reduce the risk until one day RFID waves are encrypted.
All Ögon Designs product are certified RFID Safe since 10 years.
Their unique conception allows their shell to act like faraday cages. Thanks to that, the waves from transmitters-receivers cannot reach the inside of your wallet.
This principle also protects your magnetic cards, train tickets, etc, of a potential demagnetization.
IN THE MEDIA
Our design products combined with RFID technology has already convinced thousands of users all over the world.
The issue of securing intangible data is becoming a major problem of our modern society. Media has largely covered this issue. You will find in this video extracts of news reports explaining the risks of this technology.
